As the owner of a franchise business, your work is never done.
From attending seminars and hiring new employees to making sure your building and products comply with corporate policy, there’s a lot to worry about. With so much to do, it’s no wonder that most franchise owners report working 60 hours-a-week or more.
To avoid feelings of burn out or anxiety, it’s critical that you establish a healthy work-life balance. Here are three simple tips for doing just that:
Stick to a schedule. This is easier said than done, but you can at least create a framework. Wake up, go to work and eat your meals at the same time every day. Yes, surprises will come up from time-to-time, but if you stick to a strict schedule you can ease into a more familiar routine. The human body likes predictability, so if you can align your day-to-day responsibilities with your circadian rhythm you’ll feel less stressed and more in control.
Implement a mindfulness practice. When was the last time you actually sat down and just breathed? Don’t take out your smartphone, tablet or laptop. Just sit and enjoy the sound of silence. Now, take a deep breath in and count to three. Exhale slowly, counting to three again. Sitting in silence once or twice a day for 5 – 10 minutes is an effective way to re-center your thoughts, calm your mind and regain focus. Try it.
Leave electronics out of the bedroom. In 21st-Century society, there’s no escaping technology, but you can minimize its hold on you. Keep your smartphone and computer out of your bedroom. When you wake up in the morning, give yourself at least half an hour to wake up. Prior to going to bed at night, do the same. Constant exposure to blue LED light isn’t just bad for sleep patterns, it can also lead to depression.
By taking steps to improve your work-life balance, you’ll feel better and your franchise business will be more successful. Good luck!
